GF008 - ROCKING SHIP AUTOMATA - BENJAMIN RICE OF NEATH (S WALES) 1757-1813.



An interesting longcase clock featuring a painted dial with rocking ship Automata in the arch made by the quality dialmakers James Wilson of Birmingham (1777-1809).

The dial was the subject of an article in 'Clocks' magazine in 2009 documenting the full restoration of the distressed dial by noted restorer Mary Tennant who has written several books on the subject.

The clock has an 8 day movement which strikes on the hour.

Housed in an elm and mahogany case with swan neck pediment and brass paterae, reeded columns to the hood with brass capitals, and canted and reeded corners to the trunk and base.
