GF106 - CHAS SUTTON OF TAUNTON. 8 DAY WITH STRIKE/SILENT
This superb long case clock stands in a tall mahogany case with rich detailing, including reeded pillars flanking the trunk, fruitwood inlays to the arch, further pillars with corinthian capitals, and curved dome to the top. It displays three large brass finials on the hood.
The high quality movement has 8 day duration, date function, and second hand, and a strike/silent feature to the arch, very useful for silencing the strike at night-time or if guests stay who are not used to striking clocks!
The dial is of silvered brass with beautiful scrolled engraving and the makers name, Chas Sutton of Taunton. The original diamond hands are matched with the original second hand.
Charles Sutton is listed as working in Taunton from 1804-1830, located in Fore Street, having been apprenticed to Henry Foy in 1797 for 7 years.
I have owned several of his clocks, both silvered and painted dials.
This clock is in very good overall condition, working well, and with only one or two blemishes, including a slight split to the arch.
Lovely clock ready to display,
