GF113 - THOS LAKE, TAUNTON - SOMERSET 8 DAY LONG-CASE CLOCK C1800

A very attractive painted dial 8 Day clock by this quality maker who was working in Taunton from 1793 until about 1839 before bringing his sons into the business and trading as Lake and Sons. They were also opticians, and traded from East Street, and later 4 Fore Street (possibly the same premises). Thos Lake was an influential businessman who founded the first gas company in the town!

This clock has a very attractive 12" dial by Osborne's Manufactory of Birmingham with raised gesso gold work in the corners after the style of Wilsons. The centre features floral decoration.

It has steel hands and a second hand, and strikes the hours on a bell. The date wheel is not connected.

The oak case is 79" high and has reeded columns to the trunk and hood with brass capitals, swans neck pediment, and mahogany crossbanding and panels to the case.

With a pair of matching iron weights and pendulum with brass bob this lovely clock will be an asset to any home or collection.
